Introduction
Dikabon means digital receipt, it is derived from Digitaler Kassenbon. Dikabon is a very young startup, established in September 2022 in Frankfurt, Germany.
The idea to digitalize the paper receipts came from the founder of the company when he was at the grocery store, while he was putting back the cart, he found paper receipts boiling out of the bin and spread all away on the floor making the environment unfriendly and unclean. The ideation process triggered with a question: Can’t we digitalize the paper receipts?
During the ideation process, many facts were discovered, few of them were:
- Paper receipts are not only environmental problem but also an economic loss.
- The paper itself may also be coated with the harmful chemicals, bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol B (BPS), which can be absorbed into our bodies.
- Printed paper receipts cannot be recycled.
- Paper receipts that end up in the bin are thought to generate as much as 1.5 billion pounds of waste per year.
- For one year in the US alone it takes 10 million trees, 250 million gallons of oil, and 1 billion gallons of water to produce these paper receipts.
- Significant costs for the business including supermarkets, retailers, shops, restaurants etc.
- There’s the upfront cost of setting up and the ongoing costs for storage and supplies.
